Everyone loves a burger night, and while burger joints have lifted their game in Perth over the last few years, there’s no need to pay a fortune for a burger and fries when you can replicate the experience at home for a fraction of the cost. I’ve shared the details of two burger options below. Woolies at Galleria offer great grass fed burgers ready to grill so give those a try and if you prefer a meat free option I’ve also included ingredients for a delicious Mushroom and Haloumi Burger.
My hot tip for preparing your mushies for a burger is to fry them in your sandwich press. It’s quicker, cooks both sides at the same time, flattens the mushroom so you can fit it in the burger and it retains the moisture so you need less oil to cook them.
Get the family together and treat them to Perth’s best burger at home!
Ingredients per Burger
1 x Grass Fed Burger - Woolworths
1 Tbsp olive oil - Woolworths or Coles
2 x slices of cheese (Cheese - Dairyworks Natural Cheddar Slices) - Woolworths or Coles
OR
1 x Portobello or Field Mushrooms - Morley Fresh
2 sprigs thyme fresh - Morley Fresh
1 Tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper
Haloumi - Lemonos 180g sliced lengthways in half or thirds - Woolworths or Coles
Burger inclusions
1 x Burger Bun (Sesame Buns, Hi Fiber-Low GI, Hamburger Roll) - Bakers Delight
2 Tbsp Mayonnaise
Iceberg lettuce, washed and torn into burger size pieces - Morley Fresh
2 slices or 2 Tbsp - Fresh beetroot, peeled and sliced into super thin rounds or grated - Morley Fresh
2 slices - ripe tomato, sliced into 3mm rounds - Morley Fresh
2 slices - red onion, sliced into thin rounds - Morley Fresh
2 Tbsp tomato relish (Beerenberg Burger Relish) - Woolworths or Coles
3-4 pickles - try McLure’s sweet and spicy pickles - Woolworths or Coles
Method
Cook your grass fed burger to packet directions.
When you flip the burger to cook the second side, top it with the sliced cheese to allow it to melt over the burger.
Slice the bun in half and toast face down in the pan with your burger or under an oven grill.
SANDWICH PRESS MUSHROOMS
Wash and pat dry your mushroom
Drizzle with olive oil
Sprinkle with thyme
Season with salt and pepper
Place in a hot sandwich press for around 3 minutes or until soft and aromatic. Set aside.
Drizzle your haloumi with olive oil and place into a hot pan or onto a hot sandwich press and cook for a couple of minutes each side until lightly browned. You can cook this at the same time as your mushroom/s if there is space.
To Stack
Lay the burger bun bottom down then add mayonnaise and spread.
Top with lettuce, beetroot, tomato and onion.
Add the burger patty or haloumi and mushroom
Spread the top of the burger with relish and close your burger.
Enjoy!

TIPS FOR A BETTER BURGER AT HOME
Styling
Burger night is all about keeping it casual with cutlery optional! Have plenty of napkins on hand for the sauce drips. You could choose to set a MYO burger table and bring all the ingredients to the table for the family to build their own burger! Fun and games.
