Win the war against cold and flu! Strategies for staying well this winter.

During the cooler months, you might be tempted to curl up on the couch and watch the telly. While it's good to relax and have some downtime, it's also important to stay active and healthy during winter to avoid the cold and flu.

Our team at Wizard Pharmacy Morley Galleria Car Park have put together seven tips to guide you through this cold and flu season.

1. Eat immune-boosting foods daily

Our immune system can be a complicated thing - there is no simple trick to "boosting" it but making sure you are eating a well-balanced diet with plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables can help. Whilst vitamins should never replace a healthy diet, they can be a great way to support it. Pay particular attention to getting enough:

·         Vitamin C

·         Zinc

·         Probiotics

Speak to a Wizard Pharmacist or Wizard Naturopath about what supplements can help you.

2. Drink plenty of water

As winter approaches, our water consumption tends to drop. While the idea of a hot beverage is welcoming with temperatures dropping, it's just as important to stay hydrated when it's cold. Keep a water bottle in sight to remind yourself to drink water throughout the day.

3. Practice good hygiene

Being vigilant about hygiene has never been more important. Not only will it help stop the spread of COVID-19, but it also helps stop the spread of colds and the flu.

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser if running water is not available. Cover your mouth and nose with your inner elbow when coughing or sneezing and throw away used tissues.

4. Spend time outdoors

We tend to get less sunlight on our skin in winter, which can lead to less vitamin D production - crucial for bone health and general health. For extra vitamin D benefits, get moving outdoors. Being outdoors is also a great mood booster for when you've been cooped up inside all day.

5. Exercise regularly

The cold weather might make it harder to stay motivated but prioritising regular exercise in the cooler months is very important. Try mixing it up with some new activities like hot yoga, indoor sports, or download a fitness app!

6. Reduce screen time

Jumping from your work computer to a screen at home can put stress on your mind and body, which can affect your overall health and lower your immunity. Even if you're cosy on the couch, make sure you're limiting TV and phone time and getting a decent amount of sleep and exercise.

7. Get a flu shot annually

Flu strains change each year, so it's important to get your annual flu vaccination. For optimal protection, it is recommended for you to get your flu vaccine from Mid-May to ensure that your immune system is at it’s strongest when flu season hits. Book your flu vaccination here
